New Hampshire BBQ: An Updated Review for KC's Rib Shack
One of the most glaring examples of a barbecue joint in serious need of a review update is KC's Rib Shack (Manchester NH), who gets an expanded one now. The original review reflected the 2006 state of the art, with a very brief write-up and a mere nine photos. The 2011 version has 50 photos, including a whopping 15-photo rib retrospective covering every year from 2006 to 2011. As for the editorial slant, there are some pros and cons, but overall I'd say this is a continued thumbs up for the Rib Shack.

Brooklyn BBQ: Mable's Smokehouse Reviewed
The site's 225th barbecue review is posted for Mable's Smokehouse (Brooklyn NY), a Williamsburg neighborhood joint with a compact menu and a no-nonsense vibe. How's the food? Check out the review via the Reviews page, the link above or link to reviews using the red icons in the Joints directory.

Massachusetts BBQ: Little Red Smokehouse Reviewed
Here's an update of a review from 2006 for a restaurant that closed in 2008 and reopened in 2010: Little Red Smokehouse (Carver MA). The space is roomier, the menu (barbecue and otherwise) has expanded even more and some of the prices have actually gone down. As for the food, check out my review via the Reviews page, the link above or link to reviews using the red icons in the Joints directory.

I have another updated review in the can for one of New Hampshire's most popular barbecue joints. Stay tuned.
Queens BBQ: A First Look at Long Island City's John Brown Smokehouse
One of the most talked about barbecue restaurants to hit New York City is John Brown Smokehouse (Long Island City NY), a 2-week old joint helmed by Josh Bowen, a Kansas City native who previously manned the pits at Hill Country. I was in Brooklyn over the weekend, so I made it over to Queens to investigate as much of the menu as possible. My run-down of the seven meats I tried is in this preview that will become a full fledged review only after I check it out one more time. Overall, I like what I found so far.

Joints Directory Madness
Here's the latest batch of barbecue Joints directory activity, spanning six states. This time there are seven new joints (including two locations of one joint), two expansions, five closings, three website additions, three Facebook additions and one name change.
NEW JOINTS and/or NEW TO THE DIRECTORY
John Brown Smokehouse (Long Island City NY) is a Queens barbecue joint that opened last week. Kansas City-born pitmaster Josh Bowen worked recently at Hill Country, and the menu includes burnt ends and pork belly. Sounds like there's some potential there. Thanks to Vinny for the lead.
RUB BBQ (East Meadow NY) is a new expansion of the Manhattan flagship that should breathe life into the moribund Long Island BBQ scene. www.rubbbq.com
Cody's BBQ and Grill (Riverhead NY) is an eastern Long Island BBQ joint named after Buffalo Bill. According to local reports, the theme is tacky western but there's a Southern Pride smoker in there producing real smoked 'cue. Thanks to Sledneck for the early lead.
Bubby's (New York City and Brooklyn) is a 2-location multiple personalitied eatery most known for their pies, but a closer look at their website reveals that they're serious about the barbecue too. They smoke using cherry wood in an Ole Hickory pit and are very discriminating about their meat sourcing. www.bubbys.com
Farm Bar & Grille (Dover NH) is an expansion of the northern Massachusetts duo of The Farm Bar (Essex MA) and The Farm Downtown (Beverly MA). www.farmbargrille.com
Pete and Kelly's Blues Wagon (Trenton ME) is a 1 year old new addition just short of Bar Harbor that serves three meals a day and features regular entertainment by owner and blues legend Big Pete Pearson.
Deux Cochon (Portland ME) put an unexpected and sudden halt to their barbecue hooliganism on August 4.
River Run (Plainfield VT) was previously listed as breakfast only, but they're closed. Thanks to Alice for the info.
Big D's BBQ (Southampton NY) is apparently closed. No online trace of their existence, and the phone is now something else.
Pig Pen Bar & Barbeque (New City NY) is closed.
Piggy Bank (Beacon NY) is closed.
Slater's (Bolton MA) is the new name for Great Brook Farm. The phone number is the same, and based on my brief visit, the menu is too. Thanks to Ling for the heads up and to Hidden Boston for the web info. www.slaters.biz
Eddie B's Comfort Food & BBQ (Portsmouth NH) now has a Facebook page added for reference.
Charlie's BBQ (Queensbury NY) now has a Facebook page added for reference.
Mustang Smoked BBQ & Fried Chicken (Troy NY) now has a Facebook page added for reference.
Stevie's Eatery (Marlborough MA) now has a website: www.stevieseatery.com
Brunswick BBQ & Brew (Troy NY) probably has had a website for a while, but I just added it now: www.brunswickbbq.com
Cue (Saugerties NY) now has a phone number and website: www.stevieseatery.com
Boston BBQ: Redbones to Open Rib Shack in Cambridge's Kendall Square
Decades old Davis Square barbecue joint Redbones has already deployed a food truck at various Boston locations this summer, and now they're launching a quick service "Rib Shack" in Kendall Square. According to a report on The Feast, it may happen as soon as today.
Massachusetts BBQ: Pour Farm Tavern Reviewed
The site's 224th barbecue review is posted for Pour Farm Tavern (New Bedford MA), a Southeast Massachusetts barbecue joint that manages to be both urban and out of the way. As expected, the beer took precedence over the 'cue, but I have to at least give them credit for their outside-the-mainstream take. Check out the review via the Reviews page, the link above or link to reviews using the red icons in the Joints directory.

New Hampshire BBQ: Pit Stop Smokehouse Reviewed
The site's 223rd barbecue joint review is posted for Pit Stop Smokehouse (Westmoreland NH), a Keene area joint that took some effort to get to but one that's on my return visit list. Check out the review via the Reviews page, the link above or link to reviews using the red icons in the Joints directory.

Connecticut BBQ: One Eyed Pig Reviewed
The site's 222nd barbecue review is posted for One Eyed Pig (Newtown CT), not to be confused with my previous review for Rhode Island's Dancing Pig. Interestingly, expectation played a minor role in both reviews: for Dancing Pig, expectation was high and they fell short; for One Eyed Pig, expectation was low and they cleared the mark. Check out the review via the Reviews page, the link above or link to reviews using the red icons in the Joints directory.

Pigtrip is Five Years Old Today
There's been some ups, some downs and a brief hiatus, but there's no stopping PigTrip, at least for the time being. In that 5-year span, the site's focus has changed a few times, coming full circle to what is now mainly a review site. In the last year alone, 46 new barbecue joint reviews were unveiled, with 5 review updates, 11 burger reviews and a donut review upping the pace to better than 5 reviews a month, even with a two-month breather.
While I'm glad the review output is at its most prolific level since the earliest days (when a pre-launch backlog was in play), I do miss the time when PigTrip siite updates were an almost daily occurence. And I readily admit that the soul of the site is still missing. PigTrip won't be aiming to break stories and be the first to review an important new restaurant, as was often the case in its heyday, but the barbecue essays and a shadow of the old swagger will be back. Meanwhile, the goal now is what it's always been: to give a fair and honest assessment of every barbecue joint I hit, making the information useful for any barbecue fan, whether their personal tastes are similar to or different from my own.
